Designed in 2016 by the multi-award-winning Swiss architect Charles Pictet, this unique south-facing chalet, located in the Swiss village of Lens, just 10 minutes from Crans-Montana, is more accurately described as a work of art. Proven by its exclusive 12 page feature article in the Italian magazine ‘Casabella’, a worldwide reference in the sector. A rare architectural achievement.
Replacing wood with textured concrete (a design technique which gives the texture of wood) and stone with copper, but keeping the external form of a conventional chalet, Chalet Alpenglow with its shingled roof is a harmonious mix of styles, creating a modern version of a traditional alpine house.
Its avant-garde design, however, does not compromise on space or practicality. Thanks to its large surface area (452m2 gross on a plot of 1582m2), its high ceilings and large picture windows, light penetrates this masterpiece from all angles, optimizing the illumination of all rooms.
Ground Floor:
The spacious entrance hall quickly reveals the full impact of the chalet's innovative design by giving way to a high ceiling dining room with picture windows and a large west-facing terrace. This is the perfect place to entertain guests or to simply relax and enjoy the sun setting over the Swiss Alps.
The flow of the imaginative semi-open plan layout leads naturally to the beautiful living room (with its welcoming open fire) and a fully fitted kitchen, with direct access to the south-facing balcony.
Also on this floor is the first of three large double bedrooms, with built-in wardrobes and a generous en-suite bathroom.
First Floor:
Heading up the contemporary staircase to the first floor which, as is the case for all the woodwork constructed from Swiss larch wood, you arrive on the first-floor landing (with plenty of clever storage and even a library) where you find the master bedroom with stunning floor-to-ceiling windows, a large adjoining dressing room and a magnificent bathroom with not only a bath and shower but also the most stunning of views!
On this same floor is the third double bedroom with a large picture window, a generous dressing room, en-suite shower room and north facing balcony. An office with plenty of storage cupboards, completes this floor.
Basement:
The word ‘basement’ doesn’t do this floor justice. In addition to the wine cellar, technical room (geothermal) and laundry, there’s a breathtaking workshop-type space that runs almost the entire length of the house. Currently used as an artist's studio, with its huge, full-wall landscape window, strategically placed LED strip lights (as per the rest of the house) and the same mix of wood and concrete as used throughout, it’s an airy, bright and inspiring space for all types of creativity; but can also be remodeled to meet the new owner’s requirements – perhaps a wellness area, a gym or a cinema? It also has the bonus of direct access to the south-facing garden.
Parking:
The generously sized indoor garage (suitable for two large vehicles) is accessible directly from the ground floor. There’s also a cloakroom and storage space for sports equipment. In front of the garage is a spacious carport for two additional cars.
Location:
Lens is the capital of the Haut-Plateau region, which includes the village of Crans-Montana. The village of Lens itself has all day-to-day amenities - primary school, bank, pharmacy, local shops, restaurants, a sports centre and tennis courts – as well as the Opale Foundation Museum and the famous Christ the King, a monumental statue marking the 19th centenary of the death of Christ, which was inaugurated on 22 September 1935.
This incredible chalet, located in the peaceful Sergnou district in upper Lens, is truly unique.
With the world-renowned golf and ski resort of Crans-Montana on its doorstep, and breathtaking views across the Rhone Valley, Chalet Alpenglow's location is likely to be as sought after as its innovative, architectural style.
